Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before you hire, in plain English. If your question isn't answered here, call us on 01254 411064, message us on WhatsApp, or email hello@hyndburnvanhire.co.uk and we'll come straight back to you.
Hiring with us
Who can hire a van from Hyndburn Van Hire?+
You need to be aged between 25 and 70, hold a full driving licence valid for the vehicle you're hiring, and be able to provide a DVLA check code so we can verify your licence.
We can't hire to anyone outside the 25 to 70 age range, and the same rule applies to any additional drivers. This is set by our insurers rather than by us, so unfortunately there are no exceptions we can make.
What do I need to bring when I collect the van?+
- Your full photocard driving licence
- A DVLA licence check code, free from gov.uk/view-driving-licence. Codes expire after 21 days, so create yours close to your hire date
- Two forms of proof of address dated within the last three months — a utility bill, bank statement or council tax bill
- The payment card used for the booking, in your own name
Everything needs to be in the name of the person named on the hire agreement.
How long do I need to have held my licence?+
You'll need to have held a full licence for at least two years before we can insure you.
Can I hire if I have points on my licence?+
We can usually insure drivers with up to six points. Certain convictions mean we're unable to offer a hire at all. If you're unsure, call us before you book and we'll check for you rather than have you turn up and be disappointed.
Do you take a deposit?+
We take a refundable pre-authorisation on your payment card at the start of the hire. The amount depends on the vehicle and the level of cover you choose. It isn't taken from your account, it's simply held, and it's released after the van comes back and has been checked.
How do I book, and can I change or cancel?+
The quickest way is online — our booking system shows live availability and prices, and takes a couple of minutes. If you'd rather talk it through, call 01254 411064, message us on WhatsApp, or email hello@hyndburnvanhire.co.uk.
If your plans change, let us know as soon as you can. We ask for at least 24 hours' notice of a cancellation, otherwise a charge of up to one day's hire may apply.
Check availabilityCan I collect the van the night before?+
Yes, as long as the vehicle is free and you can get to us. An overnight charge may apply, so just ask when you book.
Do you offer business accounts?+
Yes. If you're hiring regularly for work, get in touch and we'll set you up with an account and agreed rates.
Your van
What size van do I need?+
We run two vans, and between them they cover almost every job.
Maxus Deliver 7 — the medium van. A 2.0-litre turbodiesel with 6.3m³ of load space on the L1H1 body, up to 9.2m³ on the L2H2, and a payload of 1,025kg to 1,220kg. It's built for urban agility — trade tools, multi-drop rounds, a one-bed move, a tip run or a week of site work.
Maxus Deliver 9 — the large van. A 2.0-litre turbo diesel built for heavy-duty distribution: up to 12.9m³ of cargo volume and a maximum payload of 1,520kg, with stand-up height in the back. Whole-house moves, container loads, event kit.
Not sure? Call us and describe what you're moving. We'd rather point you at the right van than have you make two trips.
Do I need a special licence to drive the large van?+
No. A normal UK car licence covers both vans on our fleet, the Deliver 9 included. If you passed your car test on or after 1 January 1997 you hold category B, which covers vehicles up to 3,500kg gross vehicle weight, and neither of our vans exceeds that.
One thing worth knowing: the 3,500kg limit is the total weight, including the van itself, fuel, you, your passengers and everything you load. Overloading is an offence and it's your responsibility, so if you're moving something heavy, ask and we'll help you work it out.
Will the van be clean and roadworthy?+
Yes. Every van is valeted and safety-checked between hires. When you collect it, a member of our team walks round the vehicle with you, notes any existing marks and records the fuel level. You'll both sign that record, and we repeat the process when the van comes back so there are no surprises either way.
Are your vans tracked?+
Yes. Every vehicle carries a telematics unit that records location, mileage and driving data. We use it to protect the fleet against theft, to support insurance claims, and to find you quickly if you break down. We're upfront about it because we think you should know — you can read exactly what's recorded and how long we keep it in our Privacy Policy.
On the road
Can I take the van abroad or into Europe?+
No. Our vehicles are insured for use in the United Kingdom only and we don't offer a European hire package.
Taking the vehicle outside the UK breaches your hire agreement and invalidates the insurance, which would leave you personally liable for the full value of the van. If you need European cover, we're not the right hire company for that trip and we'd rather tell you now.
Are pets allowed?+
Yes, dogs are welcome. There's a flat charge of £20 per day, which covers the deep clean afterwards, and we ask that you tell us when you book so we can set the right van aside.
Your dog needs to be properly secured for the whole journey, in a harness, crate, pet carrier or behind a dog guard. That's a Highway Code requirement (Rule 57) as well as ours, and an unrestrained animal in a van is genuinely dangerous for everyone in it.
Is smoking allowed in the van?+
No. It's illegal to smoke in a vehicle used for work in the UK, and all our vans are strictly non-smoking, e-cigarettes and vapes included. If a van comes back smelling of smoke we have to take it off the road to be deep cleaned, and a cleaning charge will apply.
Are the speed limits different for vans?+
Yes, and it catches people out. Most vans are subject to lower national speed limits than cars on single and dual carriageways. It's worth a two-minute read before you set off: gov.uk/speed-limits.
What happens if the van breaks down?+
Every one of our vans comes with RAC breakdown cover as standard.
- Get yourself somewhere safe first
- Call the RAC on the number shown on your rental agreement, on the card in the vehicle and on the keyring
- Let us know on 01254 411064 so we can keep track and arrange a replacement vehicle if the van can't be fixed at the roadside
Outside office hours, call the RAC first. They're 24 hours.
What should I do if I'm involved in an accident?+
- Stop and make sure everyone is safe. Get medical attention if anyone is hurt, and call 999 if needed
- Don't admit fault to anyone at the scene — that's for the insurers to determine
- Exchange details with all other drivers involved, and take the details of any witnesses
- Take photographs of all the vehicles, their positions and the wider scene
- Call us straight away on 01254 411064 and tell us what's happened
- Confirm it in writing to hello@hyndburnvanhire.co.uk within two business days
- Report it to the police if anyone is injured, if the road is blocked, or if another party leaves without giving details. Theft must be reported to the police and to us within one business day
What if I get a parking ticket, fine or congestion charge?+
Any fine, penalty, toll or charge incurred while the van is in your care is your responsibility, including anything picked up by an additional driver. When a notice reaches us we're legally obliged to name the hirer to the issuing authority, and we charge an administration fee of up to £35 per notice for handling it.
The simplest way to avoid this is to pay any charge yourself at the time — clean air zones and congestion charges in particular are much cheaper paid on the day.
Can I let someone else drive the van?+
Only if they're named on the hire agreement as an additional driver. They need to meet the same 25 to 70 age requirement, pass the same licence checks, and be present at collection with their photocard licence and DVLA check code.
If anyone who isn't named on the agreement drives the van, the insurance is void and you'd be personally liable for any claim, so please don't.
Costs, fuel and mileage
How is the hire priced?+
Our hire periods run on a rolling 24 hours from the time you collect. Pick the van up at 10am and it's due back by 10am the following day. We price daily, weekly and monthly, and the longer the hire, the better the rate.
Is mileage really unlimited?+
Yes. Every hire comes with unlimited mileage, on both vans and every rate. There's no allowance to watch and no per-mile charge at the end. The price you book is the price you pay.
It's the same on a day hire, a weekend or a month.
What's the fuel policy?+
Like for like, on both vans. We hand the van over with a recorded fuel level and ask you to bring it back at the same level. If it comes back lower we'll refuel it and charge you for the fuel plus a refuelling service fee. There's a filling station close by, so it's almost always cheaper to top it up yourself.
What's included in the price?+
- Fully comprehensive insurance, subject to the excess
- RAC breakdown cover
- Unlimited mileage
- VAT
What's the insurance excess, and can I reduce it?+
Every hire carries an insurance excess, which is the maximum you'd pay towards damage or a claim. The amount depends on the vehicle, and you can reduce it by taking one of our excess reduction options, which you'll see when you book.
How can I pay, and do you do monthly hire?+
We accept debit and credit cards. The card must be in the name of the person hiring the van, and we don't accept cash.
Long-term and monthly hire works out considerably cheaper per day. If you need a van for a few weeks or months, give us a call and we'll put a rate together.
What happens if I bring the van back late?+
We allow a 30-minute grace period on the end of your hire. After that, a further charge applies. If you know you're going to run over, call us — it's almost always easier to extend the hire than to sort it out afterwards.
Vans returned outside opening hours aren't checked in until the next working day, and you remain responsible for the vehicle until that check is done.
Delivery, collection and man and van
Do you deliver the van to me?+
Yes, we can deliver and collect across Hyndburn and the surrounding area. Delivery is subject to driver availability, so please ask when you book rather than assume it's available on the day. A delivery charge applies and depends on distance.
Do you offer a man and van service?+
Yes. Hire the van and a pair of hands, priced by the hour or by the job, with the driver included. It's subject to driver availability, so give us as much notice as you can — call or message us on WhatsApp and we'll tell you straight away whether we can cover your date.
Where are you based, and when are you open?+
Unit 1, 7 Enfield Road, Huncoat, Accrington, BB5 6NN
